Although the discussion has wound down, today's quote from the NY Times 
seemed so a propos that I wanted to pass it on:

"God gave us the forest so that we could take what we need," said Francel, 
a 23-year-old villager in Madagascar, on widespread poaching of rare 
rosewood trees. "My ancestors are not angry. There are still many trees in 
the forest."
