The noted ecologist Charles Birch died in Sydney, at age 91, last
December. He's probably best known for the book he co-authored with
Andrewartha (The Distribution and Abundance of Animals (Andrewartha
and Birch, 1954)), but wrote quite a few other books and
papers. There will be a Resolution of Respect in a forthcoming issue
of the Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America, by Paul Ehrlich
and Graham Pyke. If you'd like a copy of the bibliography of Birch's
