Botany/Vegetation/Ecology Position Announcement
Scientific Aid
Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program
California Department of Fish and Game
$11.58 - $13.34 per hour

The Department of Fish and Game has a ¾ time scientific aid position in the
Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program (VegCAMP) in the Biogeographic
Data Branch. The position is located in downtown Sacramento, and most of the
work will be in the office, although some field work is expected.
  
The Scientific Aid will perform a variety of duties related to the program’s
vegetation mapping and inventory projects depending on skills, including
keying plants, entering vegetation data into existing Microsoft Access
databases, organizing and renaming digital field photos, scanning and
organizing documents, and making simple maps using ArcMap GIS.

The Aid will also assist in the collection of floristic and environmental
data in the field using standard vegetation sampling protocols, maintain and
operate field equipment, and collect plant samples and prepare them for
deposit at herbaria. We expect the field work to be in the Carrizo Plain,
the Northern Sierra Nevada Foothills, and in Western San Diego County.  The
position will start the last week of March, 2010.

Desired Qualifications: Experience with data entry and quality checking,
attention to detail, and knowledge of the California flora and botanical
nomenclature. Willing to travel and perform field work under a variety of
conditions and to do routine work in order to learn. An interest in the work
and a cooperative attitude in field setting. 

Really desirable additional qualifications: knowledge of California plant
communities; ecological field sampling methods; use of GPS and other field
equipment; MS Access database experience; ArcGIS experience.

Additional Information: Must possess a valid California Driver’s License,
Class C.
