Job Description
The Grasslands Conservation Council of BC is looking for a dynamic leader
with the right combination of vision, knowledge, and vitality to guide the
GCC through the next decade of development and growth.
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and
management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by
the Board of Directors.
The GCC is a premier conservation organization in BC, specializing in
grasslands conservation through important initiatives that address land-
use planning, grassland species at risk, community stewardship, as well as
issues associated with the fragmentation of working ranches, grasslands
natural capital, and climate change. Partnerships and collaboration are
fundamental to the success of the GCC, and we are proud to work side by
side with a variety of stakeholders, including government, industry, First
Nations, ranchers, and other conservation groups. We have a broad
membership and wide support provincially.
The successful candidate will have experience in natural resource
management and an understanding of the issues that impact grasslands
conservation. Superior interpersonal and diplomacy skills are essential,
along with confidence and skill in a variety of situations, including
management of meetings with diverse government and non-government groups
and other political or public arenas.
In addition to the above, the Executive Director is responsible for day to
day operations, program development and implementation, fundraising, and
management and development of staff (currently 8 people) as well as
volunteers.
The position requires knowledge of:
Leadership and management principles as they relate to non-
profit/voluntary organizations
Federal and provincial legislation applicable to voluntary sector
organizations including: employment standards, human rights, occupational
health and safety, charities, and taxation.
Grassland and rangeland ecology.
Current challenges and opportunities relating to grassland conservation
and stewardship, such as Species at Risk recovery action planning, keeping
working ranches working, grassland monitoring, influencing land use
planning, working with First Nations, and policy issues.
Human resources management
Financial management
Program and project management
Experience: 7-10 years of program and organizational management
experience, preferably with a background in the environment and non-profit
sectors, as well as several years experience working with diverse groups
and individuals, fundraising, and relationship-building.
Education: Masters degree or equivalent combination of education and
experience
Location: Kamloops, BC
Start Date: February 2010 (or as soon as possible)
Annual Salary: Commensurate with experience, plus benefits
