Dean, College of Agriculture and Director, Alabama Agricultural
Experiment Station, Auburn University
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the
College and reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic
Affairs. The position demands an innovative and energetic individual
to articulate and advocate the vision and mission of the College
within the University and throughout the state and nation. The Dean
oversees academic policies, faculty appointments, promotion and
tenure, budgets, curriculum, faculty development, and research and
planning. In cooperation with University Advancement, the Dean is
responsible for fundraising and external and community relations for
the College.
This individual also serves as Director of the Alabama Agricultural
Experiment Station (AAES) and reports to the President. The Deans of
three affiliated colleges and one school serve as Associate Directors
of AAES. The Director allocates funds and provides administrative
support to programs in the AAES affiliated colleges and school. The
Deans/Associate Directors have direct responsibility for programs,
budget, personnel, and facilities in their respective areas.
The Dean and Director, in collaboration with faculty and
administrators, must provide leadership, articulate a broad vision
for the future, and provide resourceful fiscal and personnel
management to accomplish that vision. This individual will be
responsible for development, implementation, and management of
instruction, research, and extension/outreach.
Auburn University is one of the nations premier land, sea, and space
grant institutions. In the 2010 edition of the U.S. News and World
Report, it was ranked 39th among public universities. Auburn is a
high research activity institution, offering Bachelors, First
Professional, Masters, Educational Specialist, and Doctors
degrees. Auburn University has 1,176 full-time faculty, and enrolls
24,602 students from all fifty states and approximately 80 countries,
including 19,926 undergraduates, 3,689 graduate students, and 987
first professional students as of Fall 2009.
Requirements
Candidates for this position must hold an earned doctorate or
equivalent with at least one degree in an agricultural or
closely related discipline from an accredited university, and must
have experience and a substantial record of scholarly success with
credentials appropriate to the tenured, full professor
rank. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of acquisition of
external resources such as grants from government agencies,
foundations, the corporate sector and private donors. Effective
communication skills are required as the Dean and Director must be an
effective representative of the College and AAES in relations with
the central administration, other University units, other
institutions, professional organizations, diverse agriculture and
natural resource clientele groups, private foundations, government
agencies, and the public.
Candidates must have administrative experience as dean,
associate/assistant dean, department head, director or other
comparable position with proven ability to understand and manage
large, complex budgets. Candidates must have a record that
demonstrates skill in personnel management with proven ability to
manage and coordinate professional and academic heads. Candidates
must provide evidence of energetic leadership and innovative
thinking. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to effective
undergraduate, graduate, extension, professional education, a
sustained record of scholarship, a commitment to diversity, and a
history of contributions to professional organizations. The
candidate selected for the position must meet eligibility
requirements for work in the United States at the time appointment is
scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term
of employment.
Desired qualifications include experience in a land grant system.
Salary is commensurate with experience. Consideration of applications
