Wisconsin Butterflies and Moths: Natural History and Identification
July 24 & 25 (Friday & Saturday)
Instructor: Susan Borkin is Director of the Puelicher Butterfly Garden and
oversees the Insect Collections at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Her research
focuses primarily on natural history of Wisconsin butterflies and
conservation of two of the state's endangered species, the swamp metalmark
butterfly and poweshiek skipper.
The course: A general overview of the biology of lepidopterans will be
presented including comparisons of life cycles, behavior, and phenology.
Participants will work on identification of major families (adults and
immatures). Field time will emphasize habitat and food plant associations.
Applications for classroom and field studies, such as rearing and collecting
techniques, preservation, photography, butterfly gardening, and conservation
will also be discussed.
