I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) (www.imsg.com) seeks a talented individual
to serve as an Oceanographer supporting the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administrations Office of Response and Restoration (OR&R -
www.response.restoration.noaa.gov). OR&R is a program office in the
National Ocean Service that responds to threats in order to protect and
restore coastal resources. To do this OR&R provides interdisciplinary
scientific response to releases of oil, chemicals, and contaminants,
protects and restores NOAA trust resources, and promotes the protection
and restoration of coral ecosystems.

The Oceanographer will be a team member of the Emergency Response Division
(ERD) within OR&R. ERD provides OR&R with scientific and technical
support. It is a team-oriented and collaborative work environment.

The Oceanographer will work with the trajectory modeling team to improve
models used in fate and transport forecasting. In particular, the
incumbent will be responsible for learning and becoming familiar with
implementing the General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment (GNOME)
model for responding to events and understand the model enough to provide
research and development on model improvements. The team also uses simple
hydrodynamic modeling techniques for coastal areas, the incumbent will
provide input, testing, and possibly programming support to ensure these
models can be used for operational response. The incumbent will work
with others as part of a team. The incumbent may monitor the work of
others in testing or development of code related to forecasting. The
incumbent may provide input to junior staff on implementing hydrodynamic
or trajectory techniques.

Responsibilities:
• The incumbent of this position will provide research support on
trajectory forecast modeling for emergency response needs. As part of
his/her efforts, independent evaluation, selection and application of
algorithms that describe hydrodynamics or particle movement will be
required.
• All projects the incumbent will work on are related to the
application of physical oceanography and modeling for emergency response.
• The incumbent will provide analysis on client needs, perform
research on strategies to satisfy needs and propose strategies to a
workgroup for decision on implementation.
• The incumbent will work under limited supervision to evaluate,
select and apply state of the art technology and research to evaluating
needs for the development of research priorities and tools.
• The incumbent will participate on various research and development
teams. While endpoints will be identified through Division management and
some direct supervision will be provided, the incumbent will be
responsible for progressively being able to take input from team meetings,
design objectives and propose strategies for reaching endpoints.

Qualifications:
• Minimum of a Master’s degree in physical oceanography.
• Must be able to apply concepts of physical oceanography in coastal
areas.
• Write and implement code for transport and/or fate modeling (C++
preferred).
• Good writing and communication skills, in particular communicating
research results, and the knowledge of working on teams is required.
However, no previous experience in emergency response is necessary.

To Apply: Please submit a resume, contact information for three
references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the
needs of this requirement to [email protected] with the subject heading:
