About the course:
This is an intensive short course, held at the Smithsonian’s Conservation
and Research Center in beautiful Front Royal, Virginia. It offers those in
the field of conservation the opportunity to learn from leading
practitioners, educators and researchers at a facility that houses some of
the most endangered species in the world. Through the examination of case
studies, conflict resolution techniques, readings and interactive
activities, students will leave the course with a set of tools to assist
them in conservation management careers. Scientists agree that species
loss continues at an alarming rate. There has never been a more important
time for students considering conservation management to develop the skills
necessary to meet the challenges posed by climate change and shrinking
biodiversity.

Course description:
No prerequisites. This course will build upon the tried and true leadership
and communication skills and techniques used by various businesses and
government sectors, while placing them in an environmental and conservation
context. Case studies from around the world will be used as examples and
course participants will apply their own expertise and experiences in
individual and group exercises. Course participants will leave with a
foundation in leadership and a set of tools in which they can use throughout
their lives and careers.
