M.Sc. Research Assistantship in Soil Chemistry/Clay Mineralogy The position: A graduate position (M.Sc.) is available for a student interested in Soil Chemistry and Clay Mineralogy in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Funding for research costs and stipend is available.
The project: The research will be conducted under a project " Accelerated de-watering of oil sands fine tailings through biological densification" funded by the Alberta Water Research Institute. De-watering will yield densified mature fine tailings for effective reclamation and released water for re-use in bitumen extraction from oil sands ores. This project will unravel how biogenic gas production in oil sands tailings settling basin increases oil sands densification. The student will study pore water chemistry and clay mineralogical properties of oil sands tailings to understand the densification mechanism. Required qualification: Students with training/experience in soil science, soil chemistry or clay mineralogy are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a good record of academic excellence, organizational and writing skills, and motivation demonstrating interest in soils or tailings research. How to apply: Interested students should apply by sending CV (including a statement of research interests and names of references) and transcripts (scanned copies) to Tariq Siddique at [EMAIL PROTECTED] . The position will ideally begin in January, 2009 or as soon as possible. For more information on Siddique research, please visit http://www.ales.ualberta.ca/rr/siddique.cfm
