Ecologgers, Two quick questions regarding the availability/estimation of historical land use data for the United States:
First, does anyone know of a data source that has estimations for the amount of urban area present in each state dating back to the mid 19th century? Right now the only resource that I have is the historical decennial census records and these seem to focus on agricultural land only. Second, does anyone know of any way to a way to back calculate urban land area using state populations alone (data are classified into urban and rural populations). For some reason the US census records have population values for urban areas, but list no density for these. Any thoughts or answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.
