Field Internship - SAGEBRUSH GRASSLAND CLASSIFICATION Project Description: This position will involve the collection of both training and validation data for remote sensing classification of sagebrush grasslands. Technicians will follow a set protocol to collect data in the field. Sites will be located in Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area. Field measurements will include percent cover of sagebrush, grass/forbs, and soil. Field Technicians will also measure select metrics of sagebrush and grass/forbs for conversion to biomass using allometric growth equations. They will be responsible for all aspects of field work including proper operation of all field sampling equipment, entering data, backing up copies of the data, and following all policies according to the federal land management agencies (NPS and USFS). Position Description: Successful applicants will have a strong work ethic, with a high degree of initiative, and substantial experience in remote field conditions. The protocols include a broad variety of elements, with the job requiring sustained physical work in remote and demanding field settings. Working schedule of 5 days on/2 days off. The work will require overnight camping in remote locations throughout most of the study area. Background Required: B.S. or B.A. degree in biology, zoology, field-based remote sensing, or similar background is required. Applicants must be experienced and highly competent in back-country settings, demonstrate a high degree of initiative and motivation, and be enthusiastic about executing a rigorous and demanding field protocol. The majority of time will be spent in the field, but duties may also include some data management. Compensation: Stipend/pay of $1100/month (pro-rated for partial months) with housing provided when in the Cooke City area. Project runs from approximately July1 to August 31st, 2008.
