SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Science and Stewardship Assistant is responsible for assisting with
a wide variety of science and stewardship activities at the Tallgrass
Prairie Preserve and in support of conservation efforts in the
surrounding Flint Hills of Oklahoma and Kansas. He/she will assist with
ecological monitoring and develop various GIS data layers of land
management activities at the preserve and landscape scale, of both
conservation targets and noxious species. This person will provide
day-to-day contact with visiting researchers, and manage the use of the
Tallgrass Prairie Ecological Research Station and its website
information. He/she will serve as a burn crew member and work with
other preserve staff in the control of noxious weeds, fence construction
and maintenance, corral construction, and general preserve operations.
The Science and Stewardship Assistant is supervised by the Tallgrass
Prairie Preserve Dir. of Science and Stewardship and supervises no
staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Collects and manages data (GIS, remote sensing) on land management
activities.
* Classifies conservation targets and noxious species, assesses their
distribution, and prioritizes areas for conservation action.
* Coordinates and performs fieldwork and logistical support for
research, project development and monitoring.
* Participate in preserve operations including maintenance, management
and development and coordination of conservation programs.
* Participate in prescribed burning program and wildfire control as a
qualified Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
* Graduate degree in science-related field and no experience, or the
equivalent combination of education and 0-1 years of experience.
* Ability to collect, manipulate, analyze, and interpret scientific data
and prepare reports of findings.
* Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering
quality results.
* Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel,
Web browsers), GPS, GIS (ArcView 3.x and ArcGIS 9.x), remote sensing,
and ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality
of work.
* Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in
English and other relevant languages.
* Ability to become FFT2 certified and work on prescribed and wild
fires.
* Valid driver's license and safe driving record. Ability to operate
all-terrain vehicles in rugged terrain.
* Ranching background/experience is preferred.
COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
* Ability to coordinate multiple projects with several variables,
setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
* Compiles and organizes scientific data with attention to detail.
* Analyzes situations, evaluates alternatives, and implements solutions.
* Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes
to adapt to changing circumstances.

parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and
goals in a timely manner.
* Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to
conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the
organization.
* Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people,
including scientists, preserve staff, and others, providing and
obtaining needed information.
* Ability to write grants and researching proposals.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
This position may work in variable weather conditions, at remote
locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically
demanding circumstances.
These conditions may:
* Require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
* Present possibility of injury
* Require long hours in isolated settings
* Require work in extreme heat and humidity
* Provide exposure to biting insects (ticks, mosquitoes) with
possibility of disease, poison ivy, and poisonous snakes
* Willingness to live at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, Pawhuska, OK in
an isolated rural setting
Additionally, this position requires the ability to meet and maintain
the FFT2 prescribed burn crew physical fitness requirements of the
moderate level (25 pound pack test result of 2 miles in 30 minutes or
less).
