Analyst/Researcher, Scientific Integrity Program
Washington, DC Office
Union of Concerned Scientists

The manipulation, suppression, and distortion of federal government
science and the censorship of agency scientists have become pervasive in
recent years. The Union of Concerned Scientists' Scientific Integrity
Program (SIP) works to implement systemic reforms that will protect
science from political interference and improve the role and
effectiveness of science in federal policy making.

The SIP seeks an analyst/researcher to design and carry out a program
of research and analysis to advance SIP projects and strategies.

Responsibilities
The analyst/researcher will provide scientific and non-scientific
analyses for SIP staff on a variety of issues across scientific
disciplines; interpret scientific information related to political
interference in science to make it accessible and relevant to a wide
variety of audiences; and develop a research strategy to advance overall
SIP policies and objectives. The analyst will be responsible for
compiling, writing, and editing technical and non-technical analyses,
reports, fact sheets, and other products to document and communicate
research results. The analyst will also manage and organize program
information and products in support of SIP program efforts.

The analyst will:
- carry out specific research projects, including gathering and
analyzing data, writing and editing reports and fact sheets;
- seek and incorporate input from other SIP staff into research
projects and products; respond to short- and long-term research requests
from other SIP staff;
- track and summarize relevant external reports, federal notices,
testimony, abstracts, articles, and other publications;
- prepare testimony, letters, technical comments, and other technical
and non-technical documents;
- prepare an annual research budget and work plan in support of SIP
objectives and UCS programs;
- organize program information, products, and research to be accessible
and understandable to other SIP staff; and
- supervise interns and consultants as necessary.

Knowledge and Experience:
Robust written and oral communications abilities, project management
experience; strong quantitative skills; computer proficiency; a solid
research and analysis background; and a familiarity with health and
environmental issues are necessary for this position. Applicants should
be able to juggle multiple projects and react appropriately to
unexpected adjustments to priorities and scope of work.

The position requires comprehensive understanding of the scientific
process and scientific methodology; a master's degree or equivalent
experience in a scientific or research-oriented field. Applicants should
possess at least four years of advanced education and/or progressively
responsible experience in a scientific or research field; experience
with advocacy organizations and science policy is helpful but not
required.

Candidates should possess a clear understanding of the current threats
to the integrity of science; a passion for improving the way in which
science informs policy making; and a clear commitment to working in the
non-profit sector to restore scientific integrity in federal policy
making.
