How about this:

Sustainable--a practice, product, service, etc. that meets the needs of
current generations without compromising the ability to meet the needs of
future generations.

I've heard "sustainable" applied to all sorts of
things. If it's to be anything other than a
buzzword to spin almost any bit of fluff into

shouldn't it have a single definition that
distinguishes its substance from its careless
application to, for example, "biofuel" that has a
net energy loss to native plants that need no subsidy at all?

Seems a simple definition of just what principle
defines it would bring more clarity and less
confusion to the issues to which it may be attached, no?
