Western’s Environmental Sciences program is committed to creating a space for 
students to value, change, and study the environment. The department offers 
degrees in Environmental Science at the undergraduate and master's level. 
Students in the program gain proficiencies in applying quantitative and 
critical thinking skills to environmental issues, writing and speaking 
effectively to professional audiences about issues in the field, using 
theoretical knowledge of environmental sciences in real world applications, and 
incorporating multiple disciplines into environmental sciences.
We currently have 20 tenure track faculty that serve about 300 majors and over 
20 graduate students annually, offering a variety of degrees in environmental 
science, with emphases in environmental toxicology and chemistry, marine 
science, and aquatic and terrestrial ecology. Many of our students are actively 
engaged in a vibrant and productive research environment under the active 
mentorship of our faculty, and present at regional, state, and national 
conferences. Students will often also co-author peer-reviewed publications. The 
department maintains active relationships with community, tribal, agency, NGO, 
and private sector partners.
About the Position

WWU invites applications for a full-time, in-person, tenure-track position at 
the assistant professor level focusing on environmental toxicology on the 
Bellingham campus beginning Fall 2025. The Environmental Sciences Department 
and the College of the Environment support Western’s mission that together with 
our students, staff, and faculty, we are committed to making a positive impact 
in the state and world with a shared focus on academic excellence and inclusive 
achievement.

The position requires a strong commitment to teaching and research. Teaching 
responsibilities will include environmental toxicology and other courses in the 
candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate will also be expected 
to teach other courses within the Environmental Sciences curriculum.

All research foci in the broad field of environmental toxicology are encouraged 
to apply. Potential areas of research include but are not limited to: 
multi-stressor research; molecular, biochemical, and physiological responses to 
contaminants; new approach methodologies; and the use of non-mammalian model 
organisms. The successful candidate would be expected to leverage 
state-of-the-art approaches to understand responses to contaminants, 
contributing to our understanding of contaminant impacts on the environment.

  *   PhD (by time of application) in environmental toxicology, biology or a 
related field.
  *   Record of high-quality scholarship in the field of environmental 
toxicology.
  *   Record of, or potential for, high quality, inclusive, student-centered 
undergraduate instruction.
  *   Potential for cultivating learning and working environments that are 
equitable and inclusive of people with diverse social identities and 
backgrounds.
  *   Commitment to establishing and sustaining a research program with 
meaningful involvement of undergraduate and M.S. students.
Preferred Qualifications

  *   Post-doctoral fellowship or additional professional experience.
  *   Potential to initiate or participate in cross-disciplinary collaborations.
  *   Potential for applied environmental toxicology, such as environmental 
management or science-policy, through their teaching and scholarship.

Salary

The starting salary range for assistant professor appointment, tenure-track is 
generally between $77,000 - $82,000 with placement within the position’s salary 
range being based on qualifications and professional experience. The entire 
salary range for the assistant professor position is $77,000 - $85,000, with 
the upper end of the salary range typically being achieved through collectively 
bargained salary adjustments.
