Reporting to the director of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute (SOEI), 
the LoonWatch director will ensure the successful operation of LoonWatch, a 
program dedicated to focusing on protection of common loons and their aquatic 
habitats through education, monitoring, and research. The primary focus of 
LoonWatch is Wisconsin; however, the program's education and research 
activities extend to the broader upper Great Lakes region. LoonWatch supports 
North American conservation efforts by working with loon conservation 
organizations across the United States and Canada.

The LoonWatch director coordinates a handful of loon education, research, and 
citizen science monitoring programs. These include the Annual Lakes Monitoring 
Program, Speakers Bureau Presentations, Loon Appreciation Week, and poster 
mailings. Loon education addresses important issues, such as reduction in lead 
fishing equipment, climate change, and lake habitat protection. The director 
supports promotion of lake stewardship, natural resource conservation, and 
education in the North Country by integrating citizens and students into the 
processes of scientific investigation and natural resource management.

The director will work within the SOEI to implement a citizen-based monitoring 
program with students, faculty, and staff from Northland College and with 
regional natural resource professionals that:

Describe the health of and stresses affecting loon populations and lake 
ecosystems throughout the North Country
Increase citizen awareness of and involvement in natural resource assessment 
and management
Develop innovative public education on selected topics of concern dealing with 
loons, aquatic habitats, and flora and fauna
Facilitate lake management decisions based on sound science, ecosystem health, 
and social-carrying capacity
Provide public policy input and citizen science data to natural resource 
decision makers

Responsibilities

Coordinate the LoonWatch program
Recruit and train volunteers
Conduct public presentations
Coordinate data collection, analysis, and reporting
Develop and distribute educational material related to loons and lake ecosystems
Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Advancement and the SOEI director 
for fundraising, donor stewardship, and grant-writing efforts for the LoonWatch 
program
Collaborate with SOEI staff to expand the scope of lake monitoring initiatives 
and integrate these results into natural resource and environmental education, 
management, and restoration initiatives
Identify and develop opportunities to integrate SOEI program initiatives into 
the Northland College curriculum and co-curriculum:
Provide program leadership consistent with Northland College and SOEI strategic 
plans
Host yearly strategy sessions with Northland faculty members to articulate 
outreach opportunities that complement LoonWatch, the Northland academic 
curriculum, and leadership and service opportunities for students within the 
bioregion
Participate in on-going program development with co-curricular program 
directors that enhances LoonWatch and natural resource leadership and service 
opportunities for students within the bioregion
Help develop and implement funding program activities in conjunction with the 
SOEI director and the Office of Institutional Advancement
Coordinate grant-writing efforts and other fundraising strategies (such as 
mailings and personal contacts) with the director of programs and the Office of 
Institutional Advancement
Serve as a liaison between citizens, natural resource professionals, Northland 
College, and the SOEI:
Coordinate and staff the LoonWatch Advisory Council
Facilitate processes to involve advisors in planning program goals and 
directions, evaluating budgets, implementing programs, and assisting in 
fundraising
Represent the College and the Institute on regional planning and policy-making 
committees
Organize and implement collaboration with partners and stakeholders; establish 
and maintain communication links

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in conservation, environmental education, or related field
At least three years' experience in outreach education or teaching, with 
demonstrated administrative skills
Comfortable teaching undergraduate-level courses in science, education, and/or 
sustainable community development
Skilled in presenting workshops, lectures, and educational programs
Education and/or Experience
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in conservation, environmental education, or 
related field
Specific knowledge of topical areas pertinent to current Institute programs
Strong organizational and program management skills
Excellent written and oral communications skills
GIS, data analysis, and research experience with loons and/or migrating birds 
and aquatic systems
Proven track record in citizen science monitoring program design, 
implementation, and evaluation, and knowledge in critical technical areas
Grant writing experience a plus
Strong computer skills
Budget tracking experience
Possess a driver's license
Some local/regional travel required; candidate will be trained to be licensed 
as a driver under Northland College policy or will present other means of 
transportation to events and presentations
Human Relations Skills
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively 
independently and collaboratively with management
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse ages, levels of 
education, cultural backgrounds, and organization/agency affiliation
Ability to work in a team environment
Excellent time management skills required
