Dear Friends and Colleagues, NSF sponsored a new report of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) - "A Vision for Continental-Scale Biology - Research across Multiple Scales" (from molecular to global scales). Although the report focuses on biology, it treats biological systems as part of coupled human and natural systems. It also suggests establishing a new core program on continental-scale biology, applying integrated frameworks such as the framework of metacoupling (human-nature interactions within as well as between adjacent and distant systems), and integrating biology with other disciplines such as social sciences, AI, machine learning, and geospatial analysis. The important work that the scientific community did laid a wonderful foundation for the report and some of the most relevant publications are cited in the report. The Committee of NASEM<https://www.nationalacademies.org/our-work/research-at-multiple-scales-a-vision-for-continental-scale-biology> that wrote the report has also benefited enormously from several dozen leading experts who spoke at the public information gathering meetings (e.g., Janet Franklin of San Diego State University and Simon Levin of Princeton University as keynote speakers) and who reviewed the draft report and provided constructive comments (e.g., Alan Hastings at the University of California- Davis, and Mary Power at the University of California - Berkeley).
