After moving the shortcut to Unity panel, it showed up correctly, but after removing the shortcut from my desktop shortcut in Unity disappeared. This behaviour is desired, because the icons of not installed apps will disappear automatically, but will prevent using it for 3rd party applications or WINE applications. Steps to reproduce : 1. In terminal: cp /usr/share/applications/gedit.desktop ~/; chmod +x ~/gedit.desktop 2. Drag the gedit icon from your home directory to the panel 3. Watch the icon show up on the panel 4. Delete the icon from your home directory 5. Watch the icon disappear Fix: Unity should create copies of desktop files that are not located in "/usr/share/applications" and "/usr/local/share/applications". So the current behaviour will remain, but will allow users to add their own custom launchers.
