From first startup, the backlight was at its lowest level. Going into the "Battery" menu and setting the brightness to a more reasonable level only lasts a few moments as the backlight will eventually snap to the lowest setting. The slider itself doesn't seem to change from its higher setting, the backlight level simply drops on its own.
