If you got an HTTP response code (500) then you got a reply from the
HTTP server (Nginx).  So that much is working, and you need to look at
Nginx' logs to see why it thinks it has an internal error.

It could be a proxy protocol mismatch (HTTP vs. HTTPS) or a firewall
issue or any number of things.  You need more information about the
failed access.
