I can only answer questions on DSpace, as I'm not involved in the DSpace-CRIS system. For DSpace 7, there are no thumbnails for Collections. However, you can add a Collection *logo* by editing the Collection. Here's a screenshot (notice you can drag & drop a logo): https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Edit+Collection#EditCollection-EditMetadata When adding a logo it only appears on the Collection page at this time. I don't know if this works differently in DSpace-CRIS.
