I took a quick look at the 6.3 code for org.dspace.ctask.general.ClamScan
and it appears to me that the report stream is only written when a
virus is found. I see no summary reporting code.

It seems to me that the report from ClamScan is designed so that it
can easily be fed into a filter for post-processing. It's just a
sequence of lines:

  item - HAN/DLE: bitstream - NAME: SequenceId - NNNN

I thought a bit and realized that one can't really write a
curation-run summary in a CurationTask, because the task is
(potentially) run repeatedly over each member of a set of model
objects, and each invocation only knows what it did with a single
object. You could copy ClamScan (call it VerboseClamScan?) and modify
the report format so that an uninfected object yields a report line
indicating no infection. Then you could pipe the report through a
postprocessing filter which, for example, counts infected and
uninfected objects and produces a summary footer.

The curation system seems designed to be easily used as a component in
more elaborate procedures. It won't produce fancy reports, but it can
feed details to other code which does.

The in-development DSpace 7 documentation may make the organization of
the curation system a little clearer. The curation page has been
split into user
(https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Curation+System) and
developer (https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Curation+Tasks)
pages. Comments on how to further improve the documentation would be
welcome.
