Hello from the DSpace 3.0 Release Team! Yesterday's committer meeting on #duraspace was dedicated to furthering discussion and review of the contributions to DSpace 3.0, for which the deadline for contribution is rapidly approaching. The attempt was made to identify areas that needed discussion, that could be branched off into list topics between the weekly meetings. This worked better than anticipated and there are a number of conversations that should take place. Below is a list of the ones I identified from the transcript. Please scan these and initiate or participate in the ones that you have a vested interest in, or feel that you can contribute to. It will be great to have the whole community behind the release!
(please append or amend if i've missed anything) 1.) There are many contributions to the JSPUI from EKT 2.) REST is not currently included in the 3.0 list of release features 3.) Document-Type Based Submissions 4.) Dynamic Configuration 5.) Metrics Efforts 6.) Editing via Workflow 7.) XMLUI Discovery Results Filtering 8.) @mire Contributions - Branched Discussion #1: There are many contributions to the JSPUI from EKT - kstamatis stayed up until 12:40am Athens/Greece time to participate in the committer meeting, yet the EKT contributions received minimal discussion due to being last on the wiki page. (Sorry!) EKT is a new contributor and could use as much help as the community can muster to review these contributions and help get them into DSpace 3.0. Please have a look at them on the Release Notes page (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Release+3.0+Notes) and via the list of GitHub Pull Requests: https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/pulls/EKT and give them some great feedback! - Branched Discussion #2: REST is not currently included in the 3.0 list of release features - Current outstanding question is whether to release it without the ability to restrict protected content. It was suggested that a release with a clear caveat that it does not include read-access restrictions (write access being handled separately), and leave access restriction to local implementors, as well as disabling it by default, would be a way to include it as a "1.0"/Beta version. - Branched Discussion #3: Document-Type Based Submissions - Robin Taylor would like to promote this for inclusion and wishes any discussion around this feature to happen before mid-next week. Richard Rodgers may have some thoughts to contribute on this work upon his return; https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-1127; of particular discussion to repository administrators. - Branched Discussion #4: Dynamic Configuration - Mark Diggory/@mire would like to start a conversation with Lyncode about their Dynamic Configurations work (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/~lyncode/Dynamic+Configurations) WRT their ServiceManager & ConfigurationService work. - Branched Discussion #5: Metrics Efforts - There should be a discussion amongst all teams working on Metrics for DSpace 3.0 (e.g. TotalImpact, AltMetrics, PubMed, et al.) - Branched Discussion #6: Editing via Workflow - Concerns voiced about contribution to edit an item using the workflow process (https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/DS-1234); there were a few alternate suggestions, which should be discussed. - Branched Discussion #7: XMLUI Discovery Results Filtering - Andrea Bollini wanted clarification on how new Discovery filters out unauth'd results. Discussion happening off-channel. ("I'm concerned about performance implication (at indexing time) of Access Rights Awareness") - Branched Discussion #8: @mire Contributions - Desires feedback on embargo (minimal so far); desires feedback on discovery (look for obvious problems); desires feedback on advanced embargo (there were no comments during the meeting; interested implementors should route their feedback to @mire offline or via the mailing list for community discussion); work left here for @mire is to merge all commits into one and minor reformatting. Also, a few other topics were raised: - Discovery implementation on XMLUI & JSPUI is diverging, with @mire moving the XMLUI implementation forward, and Cilea evolving the JSPUI side; @mire is glad to advise if there is interest in porting @mire enhancements to the JSPUI side; release documentation should make this divergence of functionality clear. - XOAI is being included in the release, now that discussion has completed; current thought is that the former OAI will be removed from the release; releasing it as a separate module is possible if desired. - Branched Discussion: Can we remove LNI? - Branched Discussion: A deprecation path that spins deprecated functionality into a separate, downloadable module for those who want/need to continue using it. - Current documentation concerning DSpace Development with Git (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/Development+with+Git) is incomplete and would benefit from contributions and updates. Mark diggory suggests that it should evolve toward something more like https://github.com/ginatrapani/ThinkUp/wiki/Developer-Guide. -- sands fish Senior Software Engineer MIT Libraries Technology Research & Development [email protected] E25-131 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
