I ran some more quick tests, below are the results.
The issue doesn't happen when going to {dspace.url}/profile (not NO trailing
slash) but when going to {dspace.url} WITHOUT a slash the session is lost.
When the session is lost by going to that home page it seems to be lost forever
so going to another url with a trailing slash will NOT retrieve the logged in
session.
