Hi Grace and all, Yes, we are having some spam issues on the DSpace Community (dspace-community) and DSpace Tech (dspace-tech) mailing lists in recent months. We have been monitoring the situation closely, and are flagging these spam/misuse messages immediately, deleting the message and banning the email address they came from. (If you look closely, these messages do not appear in the public list archives, as they have been immediately removed: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/dspace-community)
However, despite that effort to keep our lists spam-free, the spammer seems to quickly move to a new email address and post again. As we've flagged these emails as spam, the Google Group spam filter has gotten better about filtering out some of this spam, but messages do still make it through (as you've seen) We may eventually need to resort to turning off the ability to self signup for the list, if it continues much longer. But, obviously, we'd prefer to avoid doing that, as it would require every user to be approved before they could join the list. So, yes, you are not alone in your frustrations around this spam to our DSpace lists. We're working on it, but unfortunately the spam filter for Google Groups is not very configurable, and we have to rely on it "learning" which messages are spam.
