Thanks for all who tried to help. In the end, the problem was solved by
using a different jdk, same version, but from outside our linux
distribution.

It looks as though the JRE can't even begin to open an HTTPS connection
to the artifact repository because it can't find a cryptographic
algorithm that it wants. I would first check the Java crypto library
configuration on the client host.
