My preference would be 3) make consumers not rely on .duty_cycle and
.period if the PWM is disabled. This questions of course the common
PWM idiom

        pwm_get_state(...)
        only = change(what, you, think, is, necessary);
        pwm_apply_state(...)

but I don't like this that much anyhow. YMMV.
