It's a patch for exim4 not dovecot. So it only fixes SMTP
authentication with it.
Timo said that there will probable be some sort of workaround in
dovecot 2.4.1. included.
So no it won't fix imap-login.
I don't use Thunderbird so I have no clue why it fails for you.
Maybe it would have been useful to have your dovecot config?
