I ran into this problem as well, and fixed it via
default_login_user = vmail
default_internal_user = vmail
default_internal_group = vmail
I think the recommendation is to use the new conf.d/ directory to
selectively amend the standard configuration (which would have prevented
running into this issue), but it requires thoughtful changes so it
requires time and work to migrate.
