Is there any chance that the current dovecot-2-2-pigeonhole (hg) can be
"released" so that there is a released version (eg 0.4.4) that works
with the current released version of dovecot (2.2.13) ?

Both builds fail to compile with the same following error:

You need to compile against a newer Dovecot hg version.
To Report back on this matter:
After upgrading Dovecot to the latest HG version, Pigeonhole compiled
nicely.
