Hmmm... I wonder would it be possible for dovecot to automatically lower
the 'niceness' for index rebuilds (on systems that support such) to
avoid causing such distress?

No, I was simply commenting on the one point about heavy load during
large index rebuilds - which is why I trimmed the quoted text... maybe I
could have trimmed more?
