although Thunderbird will connect on 1432 and 6188

}
This should work:
listen = *:143, *:6188

I tried that and get doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf line 68: Unknown setting: listen.
Line 68 refers to listen = *:143, *:6188
