Umm. Hmm. If that directory doesn't exist, it gives an error message at Dovecot startup: auth(default): Error: bind(/var/run/dovecot/auth-master) failed: No such file or directory I think you should have had that too? Also the socket should typically be in Dovecot's base_dir, which is created automatically.
