searching the web and haven't been able to find a lot of information. Here's the config info:

You need to fix your mail location setting;
see http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation

auth default:
  verbose: yes
  passdb:
    driver: passwd-file
    args: /etc/dovecot/passwd
  userdb:
    driver: static
    args: uid=vmail gid=vmail home=/var/mail/%u

Since you are also setting mail location here with home setting, you are probably resolving to /var/mail/%u/var/mail/%u
