What OS is this with? Googling the error shows that this would happen if there some some garbage in the enviroment. You could check what Dovecot creates for the environment by setting sendmail_path to a script like:
#!/bin/sh set > /tmp/deliver.envThen see if the file contains something weird.. It should contain only key=value pairs, no empty lines or things like that.
