In rc28 I've changed this assert to something that prints more useful information. This assert alone doesn't really tell anything what the problem could have been.
Anyway if it happened repeatedly, it would be nice to get the anonymized mbox and index files. See http://wiki.dovecot.org/ MboxProblems
