Some things to remember:
1) don't build as root
2) some builds break in non-C locales; English remains the lingua franca
of the net (heh) so you'll get a lot more help that way.
3) make sure your path includes:
/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/sfw/bin
in order to find the compiler, linker, etc. We're (I work for Sun
on OpenSolaris) going to fix this, but in the mean time you'll need
those directories in your path.
