Just now when this occurred, I switched off the monitor, and after a few seconds switched it back on and the screen came back to life. So the problem isn't with Kubuntu, unless there is something in the graphics causing it. Maybe my screen is getting old. It's random because it didn't occur at all yesterday, and has happened a few times today.
