No. It doesn't work at all for all and every combination of -a hw:*,* (see
below).

I never actually said that. With the Arduino 'Bonnet' there is only one sound
card installed, so that's the default:

When I was doing this with the USB Adaptor, I determined the values for hw:*,*
by trial and error because I failed to spot the logic. My reading of the
above is that by any interpretation hw:0,0 should work but it gives:
