Just noting that with the latest system and virtualbox updates that this problem has gone away.
I have no idea why it ever happened, but virtualbox is now stable, and the kernel memory is now only 300MB at the end of the day instead of 12GB. It's still more than is ideal I guess, but it no longer is a big problem.
