Thanks. I had another go at getting OpenCL working, but still no dice. Apparently this is a known problem with AMD GPUs and Linux hosts though, so probably not much I can do.
I have my old laptop (the Toshiba) computing at the weekends, which uses an older driver and graphics chipset, so perhaps I'll have more luck with that.
