Yes, that's the comparison I was wanting.  Those of a certain age will
recall the McWhirter twins, co-founders of The Guinness Book of Records,
from BBC's Record Breakers with Roy Castle.  Later, it was just Norris
after Ross was murdered by the IRA.  Norris was the announcer at the
race meet where Bannister finally broke four minutes and strung out
giving the time the crowd wanted to hear.

    Ladies and gentlemen, here is the result of event nine, the one
    mile: first, number forty one, R. G. Bannister, Amateur Athletic
    Association and formerly of Exeter and Merton Colleges, Oxford, with
    a time which is a new meeting and track record, and which—subject to
    ratification—will be a new English Native, British National,
    All-Comers, European, British Empire and World Record. The time was
    three... 

The crowd drowned out the rest.
