I tried typing: apt-cache policy $packagename exactly as you provided it, but it didn't really show anything useful: apt-cache policy $packagename I then tried: apt-cache policy $hplip and got exactly the same. However, Synaptic informed me that HPLIP is provided by 3.18.7+dfsg1-2ubuntu2), but the changelog says it has not been changed since October. I see that dfsg appears in the apt log, but that is dfsg-3, not dfsg1. I'm not sure how relevant that is. I've posted the content of the apt log to the Ask Ubuntu site above in answer to the original question.
