We are using only either the volume or the weight, nothing else. For us, the use case is to give some information about the content, not the box/glass/bottle.
When we enter only the weight or volume, nothing goes wrong currently. :)
And as Destailleur posted, it's totally fine like this:
If you give the dimensions, the volume can be auto calculated.
If not, you can use the volume as you like.

Wheras I now see one use case not covered in this scenario:
Maybe some day someone wants to set the dimensions of his precious Whisky box and the volume of the box gets calculated. Fine so far. But would it be a use case, if he also wants to give some information about the Whisky volume in the bottle? So in total, he would have this information:
- box dimensions
- box volume (auto calculated by the dimensions)
- bottle volume

Then you'd have to have an UI element for the shape. And they are
    no perfect cylinders.
We use the volume for the amount of content in the bottles/glasses.

Thats why I telling it should not make you much difference between selling a cylindrical item or a cubic one. The difference in volume should be minimal. Thats because in any case you are not getting the 100% correct information already now.

        Hi,

this would just work for cubic products. We sell round
        glasses and bottles. :)

But I think your round glasses are sold in a square box aren't
they ? Also its easy to implement a possibility to calculate a
    volume
of round cylindrical object. In any case you will not get
completely exact info, as the glass have sometimes the lower leg
    of a different diameter.

        Hi all !

I was just wondering why Dolibarr offers to save product
length, area (is that the right word ? not surface ?) and
volume and not length, width and height, and have area and
        volume automatically calculated ?

I'm with a customer who want's to have his products
dimensions but don't want surface and volume.

What do you think if I propose to add width and height and
have area and volume auto calculated, with ajax for example ?

        Best regards,
