Bug ID: 70095
Summary: CGI environment variables: Misleading description of
“CGI environment variables” and HTTP
Product: Apache httpd-2
Version: 2.5-HEAD
Hardware: All
URL: https://httpd.apache.org/docs/trunk/en/env.html#cgi
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: Documentation
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
The CGI environment variables section of the Environment Variables in Apache
httpd page starts with:
> The CGI specification (RFC 3875) defines a number of environment variables
> that expand on those defined by the HTTP spec.
>
This is confusing, since:
1. It implies HTTP defines environment variables, but HTTP is a protocol, which
defines *headers*, but not (at least directly) environment variables.
2. What the CGI RFC does specify is called “meta-variables”, not “environment
variables”. There is no such thing as a “CGI environment variable”. If httpd
makes all CGI meta-variables available as httpd env-variables, that should be
specified.
