Philippe Cloutier <[email protected]> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |NEW --- Comment #2 from Philippe Cloutier <[email protected]> --- Addition: Rich's mail linked above also qualifies mod_rewrite as “complicated”. (In reply to Rich Bowen from comment #1) I did not know Ralf before today, but this is certainly not an observation about anyone in particular, nor a statement against mod_rewrite. However, what was once “very powerful and sophisticated” may seem more banal decades later. To the best of my knowledge, this situation results from several factors, including those I listed in the previous numbered list, so any responsibility would certainly be shared. What I hope this ticket can achieve is: 1. To get users to consider enough whether mod_rewrite is needed/optimal before starting to use it. 2. To prevent users from underestimating the investment needed to master and achieve the results they want using mod_rewrite and feeling the frustration several reported above. 3. To avoid users trying to digest the reference directly, without first having seen some general introduction, and to prevent users from expecting too much from the documentation. There are multiple ways to achieve that, but concretely, my only *expectation* from this ticket is to avoid the suggestion that power is the only explanation of mod_rewrite’s complexity. This could be done by changing: > Since mod_rewrite is so powerful, it can indeed be rather complex. …to: > mod_rewrite may be used for simple purposes, but the module itself is rather > complex. > Is this simply a request to remove the word "rather" and "somewhat"? I don't > want people to abandon all > hope! :D mod_rewrite is certainly not the only component which is complicated. In my view (of someone who does not master mod_rewrite), a warning box about complexity would not be unwarranted, but just removing the words “rather” and “somewhat” would constitute a concrete step towards representing the complexity as adequately as possible. I filed a more focused ticket, #70033, pointed specifically at objective #3. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [email protected] For additional commands, e-mail: [email protected]
