The IESG has approved the following document: - 'DNS Terminology' (draft-ietf-dnsop-rfc8499bis-10.txt) as Best Current Practice
This document is the product of the Domain Name System Operations Working Group. The IESG contact persons are Warren Kumari and Robert Wilton. A URL of this Internet-Draft is: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-dnsop-rfc8499bis/ Technical Summary The Domain Name System (DNS) is defined in literally dozens of different RFCs. The terminology used by implementers and developers of DNS protocols, and by operators of DNS systems, has sometimes changed in the decades since the DNS was first defined. This document gives current definitions for many of the terms used in the DNS in a single document. This document obsoletes RFC 8499 and updates RFC 2308. Working Group Summary This is a terminology document, and updates RFC8499. There were a number of terms (e.g sibling, in-bailiwick, lame-delegation) whose exact definitions involved significant discussion, and, eventually we determined that some terms are so vague (or are used differently by different people) that they should generally be avoided. Document Quality The document is well written and easy to read. Terminology documents are soul-crushing to write - much thanks to the authors for being willing to slog through this! Personnel Benno Overeinder is DS. Warren "Ace" Kumari is RAD!!!!
