As a user, I think there is little reason to trust an ISP.

while any company can be scummy, some aren't. the ISP in this case may
be a value added security vendor who also offers IP transit. if you want
to do business with a scummy ISP, or if you have no choice, then they
should still have the ability to transparently prevent you from doing
things you want to do. (transparently means you know it's happening and
can decide to just unplug if you don't like it.)
my ISP is comcast, and i use their RDNS servers as backups to my own,
because i trust them to run dnssec and rdns, and to not filter content.
your perspective may differ; one trust model will not fit all situations.
