(I’ve never owned a consumer-grade home gateway; whenever I’ve helped
out a neighbour with theirs I’ve always just connected to whatever
address the gateway’s DHCP server gave me as a default route. I had no
idea there was any expectation that “router.home” would do anything
sensible. It does go some way to explain what I saw at L-Root when I
last had the opportunity to look, though :-)
That's OK when the router self-configures, but some do PPPoE and need for
you to type user ID info. Most often they currently tell you to go to
http://192.168.80.1/ but that's going to be a lot less pleasant when
people start using IPv6 addresses.
I suppose Bonjour is a reasonable way for the router and the PC to fine
each other, haven't looked at the details.
