I did some digging on the IDN support within Dnsmasq and came across the section in the manpage relating to internationalization. This highlighted that the archlinuxARM (and through inheritance) the archlinux packages have an error in their builds. The invokation of make references both the install *and* install-i18n targets. Would this explain the issue I see with an addn-hosts file having Punycode encoded hostnames generating "bad name" entries in the syslog at Dnsmasq startup? archlinux have updated their PKGBUILD to only specify the install-i18n target after I raised a bug report on it.
